The Marriott Hutchinson Island Beach Resort, Golf and Marina in Stuart, Florida is a fully-equipped vacation getaway with a great location, a 45-minute drive north of Palm Beach International Airport. It is a large estate that touches the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, so there are activities both on land and in water.

It offers an impressive variety of sports, but what drew me to Martin County was the promise of lots of fresh air, beach life, and fun without ostentation. Marriott Hutchinson Island delivered. Plus, prices are slightly lower for food and lodging than in some of the more glamorous areas of Southeast Florida, and the resort includes parking, as well as plenty of things to do.

Marriott Hutchinson Island includes dozens of low-rise villas and condos, as well as two hotels, all connected by walking or biking trails and some roads winding past glistening ponds and grassy streets. It’s stress-free living, with everything you want in a semi-private property.

The two distinctive sections of the hotel have a pool and a tiki bar. The Marina complex (the main building) has 200 traditional hotel rooms and is the center of the action, close to the dining room, the golf course and the marina. Sandpiper Tower has 75 studios and one-bedroom suites, all with kitchenettes. It is more secluded, facing the sea and close to the tennis center and the playground. Sandpiper is built around a patio and has outdoor walkways.

Meal: Eating outside is the way to go. Latitudes and Sandpiper tiki bars are delicious patio restaurants from day to night, surrounded by palm trees and sunbrellas. At Sandpiper, you hear the hiss of the ocean footsteps away. At Latitudes, you are entertained by the honeyed pop classics.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park is also a must-see for nature lovers, who can catch a glimpse of bald eagles, alligators, and rare sandhill cranes.

Also new is the unusual Sailfish Sands Golf Course, which is an 18-hole reversible championship course – play nine holes and then do it the other way around. This little-known style of links saves space and maintenance, and has its roots in Scotland’s legendary St Andrews Links.
