Imma Careta: “We pursue the same as the Jubany family”

  • Imma is the sister of Montse Careta, the woman who committed suicide in Wad-Ras prison in April 2002, accused of the murder of Helena Jubany. Montse left letters in her cell in which she defended her innocence. Despite the evidence implicating her, her sister is convinced that Montse was just another victim of Jubany’s killers.

reinterpret the crime Helena Jubany using the prism of sexist violence may agree with imma maskMontse’s sister. For twenty years, Imma has always carried on her back the letters that Montse left written just before hanging herself in prison, accused of killing Jubany. She keeps them in a backpack from which she does not separate, for fear of losing them.

“Jubany’s family is not the only one who has suffered. The Careta family has also been through 20 years of ordeal. First because of Montse’s death, and then because of everything that has been said about her, that she was a murderer, a cover-up. Montse Careta is nothing like that, she’s just another victim” she repeats over and over again during the meeting with EL PERIÓDICO, which takes place outdoors as she places documents from Jubany’s crime on a park bench, outdoors, with which he has been tormenting himself for two decades. “Being here reminds me of Montse, she taught me to love the forest and distinguish the birds. I would like her to remember her that way, as a teacher and lover of literature and nature.”

the same goal

“We pursue the same thing as the Jubany family: to find out the truth. This feeling of not knowing it is what has hurt us the most. My mother died claiming this truth, which will only appear if it is thoroughly investigated, not like the other time –in allusion to the investigation of the crime that was made in 2001–”.

“At the judicial level,” Imma maintains, “then there was misogyny and arrogance on the part of a judge who preferred to go against a teacher instead of a lawyer,” he says in reference to Santi Laiglesia, a lawyer by training and also the sentimental partner of his sister Montse.

Imma thinks the church overrode her sister’s will. Drug her like she supposedly did with Helena. Or dominating her psychologically taking advantage of the fact that Montse was hopelessly in love with him. And that this influence, the one that Laiglesia exercised over Montse, is what explains why Montse took her own life without testifying against her partner.

The error of the experts

Montse Careta was accused of the death of Helena Jubany for various reasons. But perhaps the most relevant was that two graphological experts considered her the author of some anonymous letters that Jubany received weeks before she was murdered. Montse herself was imprisoned and, four months later, she committed suicide. The case was filed in 2005.

Since then, both the Jubany and Careta families have tried to get justice to compare these anonymous letters with the handwriting of Xavi Jiménez – a former classmate of Helena at the UES who was in love with Helena, who tried to seduce her and failed – or with that of Santi Laiglesia , the partner of Montse Careta, the main suspect in the murder for the National Police, according to the main police investigator of this case in the Crims series. Justice, however, refused to make such comparisons. To the despair of both families.

When the case was about to expire on the 20th anniversary of the murder, the Jubany family provided emails from Xavi Jiménez that linked him to the two anonymous. And the new judge who has taken charge of the case decided to charge Jiménez almost in stoppage time. He will declare this April 22.

“It has already become clear that the anonymous letters were not written by Montse,” says Imma, who believes that if the truth comes out, which the Jubany family is also pursuing, her sister’s innocence will be proven.
