Hungary: on the lands of Orban, the Pope advocates “openness” to others

Their convictions are opposed on many points. An hour after his arrival in Hungary, this Sunday, Pope Francis met behind closed doors in Budapest with Viktor Orbán.

The exchange, diplomatic and confidential, took place “as planned, in a cordial atmosphere,” said the press office of the Holy See. “The role of the Church in the country, the commitment to the environment, the defense and the promotion of the family are among the topics discussed”, indicates the Holy See. The Vatican, however, has not specified whether other more sensitive points such as borders where tolerance towards LGBT people have been mentioned.

Pope Francis appealed to open up to others. For his part, Viktor Orban urges him not to forget “the Christians of Hungary”.

In the Hungarian capital, the Pope also met representatives of various Christian denominations and of the Jewish community, the largest in Central Europe with around 100,000 members. On this occasion, he spoke of “the threat of anti-Semitism which is still circulating in Europe and elsewhere”, considering that it was “a fuse that must be extinguished”.
