Highway 20 remained closed in both directions at Exit 181 on Sunday, forcing drivers to detour via Highways 122 and 143. Traffic was lined up for four kilometers over the weekend.

Transport Quebec cannot guarantee that the major highway will be reopened by Monday morning, spokesperson Louis-André Bertrand said Sunday.

The sinkholes might have been caused by work on a municipal water line that passes under the highway, he said.

“We hope to reopen it tomorrow, but we know that the work will last all day (Sunday) and probably continue during the evening,” he added.

The work includes excavation, backfilling, soil compaction and then asphalting of the roadway, he said.

Bertrand advised drivers to avoid the area and to consult Quebec 511 to plan their route before leaving home.
