But with many pandemic restrictions lifting or already lifted, it’s shaping up to be a summer to remember.

Here are some of the big events returning to Metro Vancouver this summer.

Celebration of Light

One of Vancouver’s most popular summer festivals is back with a bang this year. The three-day festival, which ends on the BC Day long weekend, draws tens of thousands of people to the shores of English Bay. Viewing locations are plenty, just walk along the beach in downtown Vancouver, Kitsilano, and West Vancouver. But for those who don’t want the hassle of staking out a premium spot, ticketed viewing spots are also available. Countries competing this year are: Japan (July 23), Canada (July 27) and Spain (July 30).

For those who aren’t into adrenaline-pumping rides, try your luck at one of the midway games.

Richmond Night Market

The popular Richmond Night market returns in full force this summer. The attraction was canceled in 2020, and ran for a shorter duration in 2021. This year, the theme — Summer Magic Rainbow — celebrates getting through the stormy COVID-19 years. Vendors will be hawking everything from street food, clothing, and knickknacks under 300 neon-colored tents.

Last year, the international children’s festival stuck with online events, due to pandemic restrictions. This year’s organizers are offering the best of both worlds: A mix of in-person events at Granville Island and online performances. There’ll be dance, music, circus, puppetry, theater and art activities created for little ones.
