The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps) has issued an alert to warn of the preventive withdrawal of different batches of Champix, the popular smoking cessation drug, from which some batches had already been recalled after its marketer (Pfizer Europe) stop distribution to investigate the presence of an impurity in the drug.
The Agency remarks that “there is no immediate risk for patients treated with this medicine and recommends patients undergoing treatment to see their doctor to assess the change to another drug.
In July, the batches of CHAMPIX 0.5 mg and 1 mg coated tablets 00019060 and 00020450, and of CHAMPIX 0.5 mg film-coated tablets, 56 tablets, were withdrawn from batch ED7396.
But now, in Spain, the lots affected by the recall are all those that can currently be found in wholesale warehouses and pharmacy offices.“Taking into account that the company has not provided a new reset date, no new treatments should be started until the drug is available on the market again, “says the agency.
Instead alternative treatments should be considered for nicotine dependence. The agency indicates that the information on the supply problem will be updated as soon as it is resolved, in the Online Information Center for Authorized Medicines (CIMA).
