‘He Stole My Innocence’: Sentence In Progress For Former Vernon Professor Convicted Of Sex Crimes | The Canadian News

The victims of a former Okanagan teacher convicted of historic sex crimes shared their impact statements in court on Friday, with one of them saying the man “haunts my nightmares.”

Anoop Singh Klair’s crimes date back to between 1999 and 2003, which was before he became a substitute teacher. He resigned when the accusations against him came to light.

In May, the 40-year-old man was convicted of eight counts related to sexual offenses, including sexual interference with a child and sexual assault with a weapon.

One of the victims told the court in a statement that “Anoop stole my innocence” and that he has been catapulted into a life he did not choose.

“Due to the abuse I suffered, I deal with triggers on a daily basis,” she wrote.

“For too long, the bogeyman not only haunted my nightmares, but seeing him in person affected me deeply during some of the most formative years of my life.”

The victims were young children when they were sexually assaulted.

Their identities are prohibited from publication, although they were not alumni.

Meanwhile, Crown and the defense attorneys advocated very different sentences for Klair.

The prosecution said he should spend five to seven years in prison.

However, the defense advocates serving a suspended sentence under house arrest for two fewer years a day, followed by three years of probation.

Alternatively, the defense has suggested a jail sentence of two years less per day, followed by three years of probation.
