Hawks score vs. Hornets spotlight: Atlanta advances to next Play-In game after beating Charlotte

At halftime of Wednesday night’s Play-In Tournament game between the Hawks and Hornets, Atlanta led by eight points. By the end of the third quarter, the competition was practically over.

The Hawks outscored the Hornets 42-24 in the third, powering them to a 132-103 win. Trae Young scored 14 of his 24 points in the period, and De’Andre Hunter contributed 16 of his 22 points in that frame. In addition to Young and Hunter, Atlanta had four other players reach double figures in the scoring department.

Charlotte had no answers defensively, and the duo of LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier in the backcourt struggled at the other end. The starting shooting guards shot a combined 15-for-47 from the field in the Hornets’ loss. This is the second consecutive season that Charlotte has been defeated in the Play-In Tournament.

Atlanta will face Cleveland on Friday. The winner of that game will become the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference group and will play Miami in the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

(All times Eastern)

Finals: Falcons 132, Hornets 103

9:35 p.m. — It’s over. The Hawks will head into the next Play-In Game and the Hornets will head into an uncertain offseason.

9:25 p.m. — Miles Bridges directs strong language at an official, and he is ejected from the game midway through the fourth quarter. He heads to the locker room after scoring just 12 points in 30 minutes.

21:15 — This is a good summary of the second half.

End of third quarter: Hawks 102, Hornets 76

9 p.m. — The Hawks are a fire, and this is turning into a blast.

20:55 — De’Andre Hunter is cooking up the Hornets. He has 16 points in the third quarter.

20:40 — Can Terry Rozier go into full “Scary Terry” mode in the second half? He has practiced his last two jump shots. The Hornets really need him to find a rhythm if they want to close their gap.

8:35 p.m. — Yes, that’s Trae Young’s 7th assist.

Halftime: Falcons 60, Hornets 52

8:15 p.m. — A brutal half shot for the stars of each team. LaMelo Ball and Trae Young combined to shoot 6-for-26 from the field. The difference has been that the Hawks’ supporting cast has stepped up and taken advantage of the Hornets’ poor defense.

8:10 p.m. — The Hornets really rolled out the red carpet for Danilo Gallinari.

20:05 — Trae Young can’t seem to find his shot, but the pass is still spot on.

19:55 — Here’s an incredible stat: Isaiah Thomas, listed at 5-9, has grabbed two offensive rebounds in three minutes off the bench.

End of first quarter: Hawks 32, Hornets 23

7:40 p.m. — Not a great start for LaMelo Ball. The sophomore shooting guard has missed three of his first four field goal attempts and drew the second foul on him with a silly reach.

7:35 p.m. — Clint Capela has been fantastic so far. He already has seven points, five rebounds, one block and one steal.

7:30 pm – Oh my. What happened to Trae Young.

7:20 p.m. — Unsurprisingly, the Hornets are shooting from deep to start this game. Charlotte was in the top five in 3-pointers made during the regular season.
