The daughter of Christopher Jung, a Toronto taxi driver shot and killed last month, is talking about what it felt like to lose her father.

“I never thought gun violence would affect me personally,” Vannesa Jung said. “We hear stories about mass murderers, crimes, school shootings; all of these stories get a lot of attention. But a story like my father’s just surprised and puzzled me. “

At around 8:50 p.m. on Oct. 24, Toronto police were called to the Pharmacy and Eglinton avenues area to receive reports of a taxi crashing into a fence, investigators said.

Police said officers found Jung alone in the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“It’s hard to accept that this is what happened to her,” her daughter said.

The police had twice obtained judicial authorization to identify the wanted young man in connection with the shooting.

17-year-old Toronto resident Isaiah Twyman is wanted on an arrest warrant across Canada for second-degree murder.

After a week of avoiding social media, Vanessa found a story online that was similar to her father’s.

“I looked for a driver who had died, who had been murdered in 2006,” Vanessa said.

On May 2, 2006, Mahmood Bhatti, a taxi driver, was stabbed multiple times by a passenger before the vehicle collided with a parked car.

Bhatti was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

And he was a father. He was a husband, ”Vanessa said. “That’s when I realized, you know, I’m not alone. Someone else has really been through this, and many other people have been through this. And that really, really hurt. “

Christopher was a single father. Vanessa lost her mother at the age of four due to illness. He realized that he shared another connection with his father due to the passing of his mother.

“I didn’t realize until I started going through the records and found my mother’s death certificate that my dad and I shared something because I was 39 when I lost my dad. And he lost his partner, the love of his life, my mother Nina, at 39, ”said Vanessa.

He described Christopher as loving, caring, tough, and incredibly strong. But he did not expect the relationship with his father to end so soon. I still had a lot to learn about him.

“I wanted to sit down with him at some point and record his life and learn a lot more about his childhood,” Vanessa said.

“And now I feel like I have many more questions than answers. And I will spend my life trying to rebuild my father’s life with gaps that I don’t know if I can fill. “
