Hamilton City Councilors Awarded Contract for Improved Sidewalk Snow Clearance – Hamilton | The Canadian News

Hamilton is still one winter away from implementation, but a contractor has been chosen to be responsible for the city’s enhanced sidewalk cleaning program.

Beginning in the winter of 2022-2023, the city will clear an additional 469 kilometers of sidewalks along transit routes and near schools, provided there is 5 cm or more of snowfall.

The public works committee voted Monday to award the five-year contract to the lowest bidder in Forest Ridge Landscaping for $ 3.1 million.

Another $ 1.3 million has been set aside in the city’s operating budget for sand, salt, and to pay for any repairs that result from property damage.

Ward 3 Coun. Nrinder Nann is “really happy” to offer the service and says it’s essentially about “fairness in action.”

The story continues below the ad.

“We should do everything we can to align our service delivery, to help public transportation passengers get back on the bus, as we recover from this pandemic,” says Nann.

Hamilton has about 1,500 miles of sidewalks, and in the future the city will not clear about two-thirds, mostly within residential areas.

In such cases, Mike Field, the city’s acting director of transportation operations, says residents will remain responsible for “within 24 hours of the end of a winter storm clearing snow from sidewalks in front of their properties. “.

Field adds that approving the contract one year before the service is delivered will give the contractor time to hire staff and purchase the equipment it needs.
