Guiliana Olmos: the route to the Top 10 implies learning

Guiliana Olmos acknowledges that she is at her best sports level. She affirms this 72 hours after winning the women’s doubles title with Gabriela Dabrowski at the Mutua Madrid Open, the Masters 1000, which means fidelity to her preparation method and philosophy of continuous learning.

“I feel like I’m playing at the Top 10 level and my goal this year is to finish it there. I think it would be a great achievement, but I don’t like to focus on the rankings, but on getting to the matches prepared, enjoying being able to travel, doing what I like and I know that if I do that, I’m going to play my best tennis and if I’m playing my best tennis, I’m not going to win everything, but it’s going to be good for me and the results are going to come”, he explains to El Economista.

The hugs with ‘Gaby’, the celebration of each point in favor with a “hi5”, the stamped smile when holding the Madrid trophy with both hands and on the neck, the necklace with the pendant of the Olympic rings appears. The full image that reflects Giuliana at the highest level of her career.

“We won because we were very aggressive, we had a lot of confidence. This year I am playing better on clay and that helped me too. With Gaby I have improved a lot, he has a lot of experience and our games complement each other. It was difficult at the beginning of the year because we lost a lot of games, very close. After training more we know how to play the points and I have learned a lot from her. Gaby and I have had many games and that has helped us. When you play more with your partner you have more confidence and you know which games are better and the plans during the match.”

As of May 9, the WTA placed Giuliana’s name in 11th place in the world and Dabrowski’s in 8th place. The Spanish Masters 1000 represented the second title in his career in this category, without a doubt the most important, since the first dates back to Rome 2020, in September, together with the Canadian Sharon Fichman. That result pushed her to finish that year in 61st place in the ranking, a table that does not pressure or alter her preparation dynamics.

The facts speak for themselves. In six months, from November 2021 to the current May, she jumped from 18th to 11th place. There is one step left to climb and she highlights two advantages in her present to achieve it: reciprocal understanding with the Canadian tennis player’s game and happiness off the court.

In the first appearance, the Madrid title was the first together with Dabrowski and his fourth trophy in doubles. Guiliana won in Rome with the Canadian Sharon Fichman, and in Acapulco (WTA 250) and Nottingham (250) with the American Desirae Krawczyk.

“With Gaby my game hasn’t changed much, my serve has improved, my returns. I feel like everything is fine now. Gaby plays a little differently, he really likes to be close to the net and he has a good hand. Basically I try to serve well and play aggressive so that I can give him balls where he can finish the point in the net”.

In the second aspect, that of happiness, he indicates: “I improved my diet, I do everything I can to be happy off the court, when I am happy, I play my best tennis, my life is very important and among many things this year I am doing what makes me happy.”
