The mother and grandmother of the girl who died in the daycare center run by Katy Jomphe in May 2018 both came to testify on the second day of the guardian’s trial. The 39-year-old woman is charged with manslaughter after the death of a 10-month-old girl in a residence on Ste-Brigitte Avenue.

The two women, who live in a bigenerational residence, took care together of the child who cannot be named to protect the identity of his relatives. The mother first testified that her daughter fell from the marital bed onto a pile of laundry and had a nosebleed due to the fall five days before the death.

However, it was a minor incident according to the mother. On Friday, the child had returned from daycare “bargain-hunter” and runny nose, then, the next day, the little girl had a high fever, 39.9°C, so much so that the mother called Info-Santé.

The victim’s condition had stabilized by Sunday, but the mother preferred to keep her daughter at home rather than send her to daycare on Monday to make sure she was okay. During that day, the mother reported that her daughter had fallen to the ground twice while moving with a small walker.

A bruise would then have appeared on the forehead of the child who hit a chair leg without however the event having “worried” the mother. Both the mother and the grandmother testified that the child “farted on fire” the day before the tragedy.

In the evening, the two women had also sent audio messages filed in evidence where we hear the child chirping and singing, imitating his grandmother. The next day, since the child no longer had a fever, she was brought to caretaker Katy Jomphe.

It was on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 that the family received an emergency call that the little girl had been transported, unconscious, to the hospital. Yesterday morning, the father of the child who was finishing his cross-examination admitted to having been suspected by the police in connection with the “shaken baby syndrome” detected by the doctors.

The latter was quickly ruled out as a potential suspect. It was after a 12-month investigation that goalkeeper Katy Jomphe was charged with manslaughter.
