Organized by settler allies, the goal of the blockade is to protest the recent RCMP raid on the Gidimt’en checkpoint in Wet’suwet’en territory at the Coastal GasLink pipeline workplaces. Similar demonstrations have been held in the past after the RCMP raids.

“We are here to block transportation infrastructure that is critical to the Canadian economy as long as the RCMP remains in Wet’suwet’en territory and continues construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline,” protester Marianne Côté said in a statement Saturday by the morning. “It is urgent that the movements that fight against climate change and for the defense of the land ally with the indigenous peoples who fight for their territory.”

The pipeline is expected to span 670 kilometers through northern British Columbia, part of which would run through Wet’suwet’en territory. It has been fiercely opposed for years.

Saturday’s rally is one of many that took place recently in the greater Montreal area. On November 25, simultaneous rolling lockdowns were held in Kahnawake and, a few days later, a march was held in Westmount, beginning at the RCMP headquarters in Quebec.

Dozens of land defenders who have been blocking access to workplaces were arrested during the latest RCMP raid on the Gidimt’en checkpoint.
