New Democrat Lisa Marie Barron has been elected into the BC leadership of Nanaimo-Ladysmith, after a suspense-filled few days of scrutiny.
The rookie politician scored a narrow victory over second-place Conservative candidate Tamara Kronis and Green’s incumbent Paul Manly who came in third.

Barron, a school board trustee and youth and family navigator, is pursuing a master’s degree in community development at the University of Victoria.
She is the provincial representative for the BC School Trustees Association and a past chair of the education committee.
His victory comes as a surprise to the embattled federal Green Party, which will only send two members to Parliament after leader Annamie Paul was unable to secure her seat in Downtown Toronto.
Former leader Elizabeth May, who represents the Saanich Gulf Islands, will return to Ottawa, as will Mike Morris of Ontario from the Kitchener Center.
Manly was one of only two Green MPs in the House of Commons at the time of dissolution.

She first raced at Nanaimo-Ladysmith in 2015, but lost to Sheila Malcolmson of the NDP.
Malcolmson later resigned to compete for the BC NDP in a provincial race. Manly ran in the by-election and won, becoming the second federal green candidate in Canadian history with more than 37 percent of the vote.
He sought re-election in the 2019 general election and won with 34.6 percent of the vote.
