In these batches, the very first doses of vaccines distributed free of charge as part of the Covax initiative. These 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine were delivered to Ghana. The representative of Unicef and that of WHO made the trip to Accra airport to welcome the precious cargo.

The Covax system, founded in particular by the World Health Organization, provides free vaccines to 92 low and middle income countries. But competition with rich countries for supplies is fierce, which the WHO regularly denounces.

The vaccines sent to Ghana were produced in India, and in all, the African country is expected to receive 2.4 million doses. According to an assessment probably far below the reality, more than 80,000 Ghanaians have contracted Covid-19 and nearly 600 have died from it. The vaccination campaign will begin next Tuesday.
