Fraudulent raffle organizer says he has ‘deep regrets’

The man accused of having cheated fifteen Quebecers for an amount of around $500,000 via a fraudulent draw says he has “deep regrets”.

The charges against Gyula Jr. Bartha occurred between 2009 and 2015. Taking advantage of his investor profile, he scammed several people by promising them the possibility of winning several million dollars in prizes through a contest.

However, the contest was a pure invention and Mr. Bartha pocketed the money given to him by his victims in order to obtain tickets, amounts that could vary between $200 and $2,000.

During a visit to the Montreal courthouse, where he represents himself in his trial, Gyula Jr. Bartha took advantage of the presence of our journalist to address the people he defrauded.

“I am extremely sorry, really. I feel very bad about it,” he said.

Mr. Bartha, who risks prison and will know his sentence in a few weeks, also admitted to receiving psychiatric care in connection with the events of which he is accused.

“I studied all that in psychiatry and it’s a personal injury that goes back a long way in my childhood, two in fact, but that does not excuse the gestures on the other hand”, he said, underlining in passing that he “lives with it from morning to night”.
