Max Verstappen tried in the closing seconds of qualifying but complained of losing power and was told to box out on his final fastest lap. His Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez will start fifth on Sunday.

Elsewhere, George Russell secures a second-row tee, taking the green from fourth on the grid. His Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton starts sixth, alongside Perez.

With Ferrari struggling with tire wear, Sunday’s race could be anything but simple in Spain.

Formula 1 Calendar 2022

There are 22 events on the F1 calendar for 2022, one race before tying the mark for the longest F1 calendar.

The season started in Bahrain on March 20 and will end with the usual Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, albeit a little earlier than usual, in November. This will be the earliest finish to the Formula 1 season since it ended on November 4, 2013.

Returning to the 2022 F1 lineup are the Canadian and Japanese Grands Prix, both of which were canceled in 2021 amid the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The schedule also includes the inaugural Miami Grand Prix trip, the first of two races in the United States in 2022, with the United States GP in October.

The Russian Grand Prix, originally scheduled for September 25, was canceled following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
