The local health unit on Tuesday reported the COVID-related deaths of a woman in her 70s and a woman in her 80s. They both lived in the general community.

The death toll from the pandemic in the region now stands at 505.

Area hospitals have 69 COVID patients, including 16 in intensive care.

The hospital announced Tuesday that outbreaks had been declared on two floors of its Ouellette campus, 6 East and 2 North, as well as the 8 North floor of the Met campus.

Two additional units are on “high alert” and being monitored for possible outbreaks: 7 North on the Ouellette campus and 4 North on the Met campus. Fewer than five patients have tested positive on each of those floors.

Admissions to affected units continue.

“Due to the volume of patients and staff affected by these outbreaks, we recommend that anyone discharged from the hospital monitor themselves for symptoms and attempt to self-isolate for 10 days after discharge,” the hospital said in a written statement.

“Precautions are maintained on both campuses and in all units to identify potential outbreaks early. All patients are tested for COVID-19 upon hospital admission and again after hospital admission, whether they have symptoms or not.”

The health unit also reported a further 140 infections on Tuesday, however due to restricted testing capacity the case count is “an underestimate of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex”.

To date, 29,520 local residents have tested positive for COVID-19. Of those cases, 3,323 are active and 25,692 cases are considered resolved.

Six more nursing and long-term care homes have joined the outbreak list, bringing the sector’s local outbreak count to 17.

There are also community outbreaks in 21 congregate living settings, workplace outbreaks in four agricultural facilities, an outbreak in a child care facility, and outbreaks at the Ouellette campus of Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare and Windsor Regional Hospital.
