FGR will challenge the release of a member of the National Guard who shot a Guanajuato student

The General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) reported that it will appeal a judge’s decision to release an element of the National Guard (GN) who is accused of having shot and killed the 19-year-old, Angel Yael Ignacio Rangelstudent of the University of Guanajuato.

He explained that he received the investigation through “incompetence stemming from the Attorney General of the State of Guanajuatowith a detainee identified as Iván ‘N’, a member of the National Guardfor his probable participation in the events in which a student from Guanajuato lost his life”.

He explained that once the investigation was drawn up, he decided to request an initial hearing in order to verify the legality of the detention of Ivan “N”which was favorably assessed and decreed by a Specialized District Judge in the Accusatory Criminal Justice System based in Guanajuato.

The Federal Public Ministry formulated before the judge the accusation for the crime of attempted homicide, due to the reasonable legal accumulation that was available at the time to support the accusation, “which is considered suitable so that the Judge who heard the case could issue a resolution favorable to the interests of society and above all of the direct victims of the criminal act,” said the FGR.

However, the control judge issued an order not to be linked to the process in favor of Iván “N”, who was released, for which the FGR announced that it will appeal said decision.

On this fact, the version of the National Guard is that on April 27, elements were carrying out “dissuasive reconnaissance” in the community of Exhacienda el Copal, in Irapuato, when they observed two vehicles parked on a dirt road.

“Without being able to identify its occupants, who upon noticing the presence proceeded to withdraw from the place in a hasty manner, a reason that caused confusion and uncertainty among the members of the institution. Derived from the above, an element of the GN got out of the vehicle in the that was being transported and unilaterally fired his weapon against the vans that were leaving the scene,” he said.

The relatives assure that around 4:30 p.m., Ángel Yael was traveling in the company of his friends, Eduardo, also 19, and Edith Alejandra, 22, when leaving a party, and they were going to a student house that is close to the university campus.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) also opened, and is in process, an investigation into this event.
