The Aston Martin team rider completed his fastest lap in 1 min 20.020 s, just 118 thousandths of a second behind Sergio Perez (Red Bull), 10th and last rider to qualify for Q3.

Stroll was also beaten by his teammate Sebastian Vettel (1: 20.913), who will take the start from 11th position.

Stroll had however always been very fast on the legendary Italian circuit in the past. He was notably the fourth fastest driver in 2017, becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history the next day to take the front row for the start.

The Canadian could still improve his lot and start in the top 10 in the main race on Sunday, since the sprint race on Saturday is considered a qualifying stage; it is the winner of this one who will officially be the holder of the leading position.

Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) was the fastest in qualifying in 1: 19.555. Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top 5.
