Extreme cold weather alert issued for Toronto


Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert (ECWA) today for the city of Toronto as the deep freeze is expected to last over a day.

According to the city’s website, “ECWAs are issued when temperatures are forecasted to reach -15 C or colder, or when the wind chill is forecasted to reach -20 C or colder. Other weather-related factors may also be considered when issuing an ECWA.”

As of 4 pm on Saturday, the temperature is sitting at -7 C with a wind chill of -17 C at Pearson Airport.

Four warming centers are open for unhoused people throughout the city. The locations are at 129 Peter Street, 5800 Yonge Street, the Better Living Center at 195 Princes’ Boulevard and the Scarborough Civic Center at 150 Borough Drive.
