Scotiabank Dance Center Open House: 20th Anniversary Edition

Aeriosa aerial dance company performs on the exterior wall of the Scotiabank Dance Center as part of the installation’s 20th anniversary. The piece, titled Home, is inspired by moths, and the dancers will wear moth-like capes. Other highlights of the special edition of the Center’s popular annual Open House include a program of artists animating various spaces in the building, creating gatherings for spectators inside and outside; free classes, including tap and footwork; excerpts from work in progress; and the online premiere of a short film about the building.

Sigurdson is a two-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee, a Leo Award-winning comedy writer, and a regular on CBC Radio Los Debaters. .

Pacific Theater returns with Wakey, Wakey from British playwright Will Eno. In the Pacific Theater production of the 2017 tragicomedy, Craig Erickson plays Guy, a man confined to a wheelchair after suffering a stroke. Guy shares his thoughts on death in the play, which Ben Brantley of the New York Times called “brilliantly dark” and “deeply moving.” Agnes Tong also stars. Directed by Kaitlin Williams.

V-Unframed is an immersive digital art exhibition displaying local and international artwork. The Alliance Française Vancouver presentation invites viewers to its new Espace V, a virtual reality space intended to interact with Francophone and international cultures through digital media. Works include Goodbye Mr. Octopus, a hand-animated coming-of-age tale; an episode of Chord VR, a series in development; and Biidaaban: First Light, a look at a “radically different” future Toronto.

Animation collective Flavourcel plays with sights and sounds of Surrey in I Spy a City. The outdoor screening is shown at the Urban Screen, the Surrey Art Gallery’s outdoor art screening venue. The projection captures different views of Whalley and the wider Surrey region using an eclectic mix of animation styles, including hand, digital and clay drawings. Members of Flavourcel include Harlo Martens, Kat Morris, Josh Neu, Julia Song, Alia Hijaab, Chhaya Naran, Gil Goletski, Laurel Pucker, Lana Connors, and Chris Strickler.

Annually, Girls Fly Too, billed as an “Aviation, Aerospace, Marine and Defense Outreach Event,” offers free flights on small planes for girls and women of all ages and the chance to meet a NASA astronaut. . Founded by British Columbia pilot Kirsten Brazier in 2012, the gender diversity initiative has introduced thousands of girls and women to flying small airplanes and encouraged greater participation in the STEM science, technology, engineering and math fields. .
