European Commission authorizes Meta to buy Kustomer platform

The European Commission gave the green light for the acquisition of the platform this Thursday Clientcustomer service, by Metaprovided that competitors have unrestricted access to that service.

Meta, new name of the giant Facebook, announced the purchase in 2020. Kustomer was then a young American company with software that made it possible to centralize customer service by combining social platforms.

But nonetheless, Austria asked the antitrust authorities of the European Union an investigation into the impact of the case, and nine other countries quickly joined the lawsuit.

The Commission finally approved the acquisition this Thursday, but with the condition of creating an external trust that would ensure that Meta would meet its competition obligations.

The European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestagernoted in a statement that the authorization “innovative competitors and new entrants to the software market of customer relationship management (CRM) can compete effectively.

Although the deal fell below the usual EU financial thresholds, the case raised red flags over Meta’s insistence on switching electronic commerce to their platforms, especially messaging platforms, such as Messenger Y Whatsapp.

Concern has centered on a Customer service called “Chat Bot,” a channel for direct dialogue with customers, used by banks and airlines, among others.

“We are pleased with Kustomer’s merger clearance from the European Commission. It shows that our acquisition of Kustomer will create more options in the competitive CRM market,” a Meta spokesman said.
