The Leamington-based hospital has announced that, at the request of the Ontario Ministry of Health, the assessment center is changing its scope to clinical services for those who have contracted or are suspected of having COVID-19.

The move is intended to help preserve patient capacity for those requiring emergency care.

Those to be treated at the assessment center must meet specific criteria: they must have worsening symptoms or have been told by a health professional that they require evaluation and diagnosis.

Patients in this category must have symptoms beyond what can be self-managed at home, but not have symptoms severe enough to qualify for emergency care.

Treatment of such patients at the center will involve a clinical evaluation including oxygen testing, monitoring of vital signs, and identification of relevant risk factors.

After evaluation, the patient may be sent home, prescribed medication, or referred to the emergency department.

“The Erie Shores HealthCare COVID Clinical Assessment Center is not intended for patients with mild symptoms of COVID-19 who are self-isolating and self-monitoring at home,” the hospital stated in an announcement.

“It is also not for patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19 who need to call 911 or go directly to the emergency department.”

That said, Erie Shores HealthCare added that the testing center will continue to offer PCR tests to people “who meet specific eligibility criteria.”
