Edmonton Oilers get four in first place to defeat Blackhawks – Edmonton | The Canadian News

The Edmonton Oilers scored two short goals en route to a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night at Rogers Place.

After Stuart Skinner made several good saves early in the game, the Oilers offense took over. Connor McDavid threw a rebound for his twelfth of the season. Just over a minute later, Tyson Barrie hit a single timer with a two-man lead.

Kailer Yamamoto shot home his room while the Oilers were short-staffed.

“It is my first year that I received a part of the penalties, so it has been nice and I feel more comfortable with that,” said Yamamoto.

Ryan McLeod was alone up front after receiving a pass from Warren Foegele and hitting his second. That gave the Oilers four goals at 9:24.

“That’s probably the best game he’s played with us,” head coach Dave Tippett said of McLeod. “He’s starting to gain some confidence and make a few more plays.”

The Blackhawks got one back in the last minute of the first on a deflection from Alex DeBrincat.

The Oilers didn’t score in the second period, but they had a sequence of roughly three straight minutes in the offensive zones that saw the four front lines enter the ice.

“Those generally end up as a goal or a penalty,” Connor McDavid said. “We definitely had our looks the whole time in the zone o, but it’s definitely quite impressive to shoot all four (lines) that way.”

In the second, Philipp Kurashev jumped out of the penalty area and set DeBrincat up for two on nothing to bring Chicago closer to two. Leon Draisaitl saved it with a quick shot on a short breakaway with 3:32 left.

Philip Broberg, playing in his first NHL game, assisted in McLeod’s goal for his first career point.

“He played within his game,” Dave Tippett said of Broberg. “He just has a lot of control and the little things that he should have done. He played the game wisely. He didn’t get into trouble, he drew a penalty, he was a solid player for us ”.

“Obviously, he’s got a lot of poise and he’s a big, strong guy,” veteran defender Duncan Keith said of Broberg. “You saw that he was able to break some plays on the blue line and make some nice plays out of the zone, so for a first player I thought it was great.”

“I wanted to play my game. So they want to play with me, play my game and help the team, ”said Broberg.

Skinner made 28 saves to improve to 2-2. Keith, playing his former team for the first time, logged 25:06 ice time.

The Oilers, 13-4, will play in Dallas on Tuesday.
