The bodies of the Italian ambassador to the DRC and his bodyguard were repatriated last night to Italy. Luca Attanasio and Vittorio Iacovacci killed in World Food Program convoy attack in a dangerous region of the country, North Kivu.

Rome demands that the UN shed light on these killings: “The mission took place at the invitation of the United Nations, said Luigi di Maio, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs. The road trip therefore also took place within the framework of the organization of the World Food Program. (…) We expect the WFP to send us a detailed report which includes all the useful details on the program of this trip, and the measures adopted for the security of the delegation. (…) We also explained that we expect to receive clear and complete answers as soon as possible. “

North Kivu is considered one of the most dangerous areas in the DRC, but according to aid officials, the road on which the convoy was traveling did not require an escort.

The Rwandan Hutu rebels denied being at the origin of the attack and on the contrary accused the armies of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
