Domestic violence is not gender violence, by Ana Bernal-Triviño

When a far-right party wins, it means that there are people who have voted for it and who believe in its speech. When you appeal to the emotional, misinformation and hoaxes are rampant. Two days after 8-M, at point 10 of the pact between PP and Vox in Castilla y León, you can read how a law on domestic violence is chosen, which equates adults, minors or women equally. This confusion so intentional It is intended to deny the existence of gender violence and, at the same time, despise its victims. Vox is the party that not even by protocol keeps minutes of silence in its memory.

Our most recent history knows terrorism. Wouldn’t anyone in this country say that ETA terrorism is the same as Islamist terrorism? Yes, both are terrorism and use the same resources: fear, threats, extortion or violence up to murder. But nobody compares them because they understand that neither the origin of the problem, nor its motivations nor its solutions are the same. The same happens between domestic violence and gender violence. Because the first occurs in the family and domestic sphere, but gender violence continues (and is even stronger) after separation and without coexistence, even extended to sons and daughters. Because the macho aggressor will not kill his mother (which is sacred to him) but he will mistreat or kill his partner. Because the motivations are very different. He wants to control her and feels that he can.

This ‘confusion’ of concepts would not happen If society knew its own laws, and will not be fooled. As much as they deny, the law on gender violence exists, domestic violence is already in the Penal Code, it is the State Pact against Gender Violence to fulfill and we have signed the Istanbul Agreement. Beyond the headline, think about how women who suffer gender-based violence in Castilla y León should feel. They stay sold and exposed to extreme levels of violence. Their lives at stake in exchange for armchairs.
