Discard change of line of the Mayan Train in Playa del Carmen

Cancun, QR. After the meeting last Sunday between the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, and the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, it was announced that there will be no changes in the route of the Mayan Train at the height of Playa del Carmen as they have requested business groups, professional associations and unions.

The decision to keep the train on an elevated boulevard, parallel to Highway 307 that runs through downtown Playa del Carmen, was revealed by the governor after the supervision tour of the railway works that he carried out together with López Obrador.

“I had a tour with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in recent days, and the idea is to maintain the parallel route with the overpass. The damage will be less because the rails will be at the same level as the overpass, “he explained.

This same decision of the Federation was communicated by Roberto Cintrón, leader of the hoteliers of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, who in a conference said that federal government officials let them know that although the request of the Riviera Maya business community is persistent, there are Factors that make change difficult, such as the fact that the Playa del Carmen railway station is already defined and projected to be located in the center of the city, next to the overpass that crosses the urban area of the city.

Cintrón Gómez considered that the best alternative was to leave the train track outside the city center, but the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) made them see that the works already have considerable progress and a change in the line would be costly .

Two weeks ago a letter was prepared by the business sector of the Riviera Maya for López Obrador, stating that the current route of the train, which involves an elevated boulevard, parallel to the overpass of Highway 307 that divides the spot in two urban area of Playa del Carmen, will generate social and urban fragmentation.

In addition, it will exponentially increase the total cost of the work due to indirect expenses such as the modification of the CFE’s high voltage lines and the purchase of land due to the need for space for the right of way.

“Transfer times will be increased by up to three additional hours, in a single trip, between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, six hours round trip,” adds the document.

Alternative

The dissatisfied sectors assure that their position is not against the Mayan Train, since they support the project, but with a different line that allows avoiding the chaos that a work of this magnitude implies.

In view of this, they suggest that the train does not cross through the center of the urban area, but instead surround it on the west, through a peripheral ring that is already foreseen in the Urban Development Plan of Playa del Carmen.

The proposal of businessmen and professional associations is to incorporate the train along this new peripheral ring.
