Surprisingly, the Orioles aren’t bottom of the AL East and are several games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. Baltimore has been in solid form, winning four of its last six games, despite not scoring many runs. Fortunately for the Orioles, one of the few teams that has scored even fewer runs is Detroit. The Tigers are one of two teams that have yet to score 100 runs, and things don’t seem to be looking up for their lineup. Miguel Cabrera and Austin Meadows have been running the offense, but Spencer Torkelson and Jonathan Schoop have yet to find their swing this season. On the other hand, the Orioles trio of Cedric Mullins, Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle each have 30-plus hits in 2022.
With the improvements to their lineup this season, Baltimore has put together a respectable mix of contact and power. The Orioles should have success against Tigers starter Michael Pineda on Saturday afternoon. Pineda has had some decent starts, but has faced the A’s and Pirates in his last two outings. As long as Mullins and the rest of the Orioles lineup can curb their strikeout tendencies, they should be able to get ahead and hold the lead. If Baltimore is able to get up front, Bruce Zimmerman should be able to keep the Tigers’ struggling lineup. While Zimmerman isn’t an ace on paper, he is a southpaw and Detroit hasn’t hit them well during the early part of the season. Our prediction is for the Orioles to get a road win on Saturday.

This game features two of the lowest scoring teams in baseball. Not only are these teams among the worst in terms of run production, but they will be playing this game in a clearly pitcher-friendly stadium. Comerica Park is near the bottom of the league in home runs, something power hitters in every lineup may not appreciate. Also, for all of Detroit’s problems at the plate, one thing the Tigers have going for them is their strong bullpen. The Tigers rank in the top three in MLB in bullpen ERA, and are more than capable of containing a mediocre Orioles offense later in the contest. It will be on the O’s to get on the board early and hold their lead against the Tigers’ bullpen. Look for Baltimore to get some quick runs on Pineda early on, and then hold off late innings in a low-scoring game.
