Denouncing lesbophobia becomes the main challenge of Lesbian Awareness Day


The verbal and physical violencethe bullying street and the prejudices They are part of the daily life of the LGBT community. So far in 2022, the Barcelona Observatory Against Homophobia (OCH) has reported up to 84 incidents and 1,155 since October 2, 2014.

In order to commemorate the lesbian awareness daythe observatory wanted to show its concern before the increase in aggressions, especially against lesbian women.

Report of the last 4 months

The observatory has reported three lesbophobic attacks this 2022, which in 2021 increased to 29.4% compared to the previous year. Likewise, the OCH has demanded the urgent approval of the State Law on LGTBI equality, the transfer of sufficient resources to deal with LGTBIphobia as a whole and the determination to take legislative measures regarding direct affiliation, adoption and guarantee of the right of asylum for lesbian women on equal terms with other applicants.

Demand

In 2008, three years after the approval of same-sex marriage, the lesbian awareness day with the initiative of the Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGTB) to express the freedom of the collective. The OCH has emphasized it’s a statement the need for the visibility of this day, since “there are still pending struggles to achieve”.

So that, The LBT coordinator of the OCH, Laurta Pi, wanted to transmit the message to the Ministry of Equality accompanied by the general director of Sexual Diversity and LGTBI rights, Boti García. In this they express that still are pending to be resolved struggles such as real access to assisted reproduction techniques or legislative measures regarding direct filiation and by adoption, and that there are still discrimination in couples of women. They also demand the integration of specific medical and gynecological care protocols adapted to lesbian women.

“Today we, lesbian women, we want to continue being visible from windows and balconies, from our jobs, with our families and friends, with the people we live with and on our social networks. We claim that we are many and different, that we want to be respected, occupying our space in public life”, claim in the statement.

The Observatory Against Homophobia continues to detect a deficit in the incidents received, so they have decided to start with a specific hotline service for lesbian (cis or trans) women on the first and third Thursday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. hours. In this, the volunteers of the observatory will be dedicated to listening, accompanying and giving support.

“We want to be proud of who we are. Let’s claim what we are, what we do and that we want spaces free of lesbophobia.”
