Crowd gathers on Capitol Hill to protest the reversal of Roe v. Wade

Police shut down Lincoln in front of the Capitol on Friday night.

DENVER — A large group of people gathered outside the state Capitol Friday night to protest the Supreme Court decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade.

The court’s ruling, which gives states power over the issue instead of the federal government, was an important decision after months of protests and years of legal fight for abortion rights in the country.

Lincoln Street was closed at 13th Avenue as protesters took to the streets chanting and holding signs, then began marching through downtown.

Denver police were closing streets throughout the protest.

The Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was a finding of the constitutionality of a 2018 Mississippi law that bans most abortions after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The decision is likely to have major ramifications in the US, where states are deeply divided on abortion, with a patchwork of laws and restrictions in many states.
