About 2,000 union members, including teachers, education professionals and school support personnel represented by the Centrale des syndicats du Québec, have been waiting more than 20 months for their contract to be renewed.

In an interview Tuesday, CSQ president Eric Gingras said he was concerned that staff would be moving “south,” where renewed contracts offer higher wages and better working conditions. He said that these school councils are “the blind spot of the negotiations” six months after agreements were reached with the rest.

Gingras said he would like Education Minister Jean-François Roberge to get involved to speed up the process. He said that it is possible to reach an agreement before the end of the year if the effort is made.
