Valérie Pécresse wants to “open a detoxification center”

The president of the Ile-de-France region (Libres, ex-Les Républicains) and 2022 presidential candidate, Valérie Pécresse, for her part, asked Monday on BFM-TV to open a ” rehab “ to fight against the phenomenon of crack consumption in Paris. “We need a response that is not only safe, that is not just to shift the problems, we need a health response”, she pleaded.

“I’m going to take the initiative, because nobody does. I am going to entrust a mission to Professor Vaivre-Douret, who is a psychiatrist from [l’hôpital] Cochin, and Elina Dumont, a former homeless crack addict: what a detoxification structure for crack addicts ”, she announced.

“When you’re on crack, you don’t get by on your own”, she said, adding that, “For the moment, we have hundreds of people who are in a square, without protection”. “We must have treatment orders”, defended Mme Pécresse.

She wishes to favor this solution “Instead of opening shooting rooms, which disturb public order everywhere in Paris and which create encouragement to consume”, she said on Sunday during a trip to Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis).

A wall derided by residents

On Friday, around fifty drug addicts from the Eole gardens district, a hotspot for crack consumption in the north-east of Paris, were moved to the edge of Aubervilliers and Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis), during an operation carried out by the police headquarters on the instructions of the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin.

A wall, brocaded by residents in Pantin and Aubervilliers, was erected to prevent crack users from going to Seine-Saint-Denis. The prefect of the Ile-de-France region, Marc Guillaume, and the prefect of police of Paris, Didier Lallement, who carried out the operation on the instruction of Gérald Darmanin, justify its construction by the“Essential protection of the inhabitants of Pantin”, they wrote on Saturday to the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.
