COVID-19: St. Joseph Healthcare Says 99% of Staff Vaccinated by Deadline – London | The Canadian News

The deadline for all St. Joseph’s Health Care London staff to be fully vaccinated has come and gone, and the hospital laid off 40 non-compliant staff members.

In October, the organization announced a COVID-19 immunization policy that requires all workers to be fully vaccinated by November 30 or submit a medical exemption.

The organization says almost all staff have been vaccinated, with 100 percent of doctors and more than 99 percent of staff vaccinated.

“The last 20 months have been extremely tough and particularly tough on healthcare and those who work in healthcare. Our staff has done an incredible job over the past 20 months. They have stepped up to care for our community in times of fear and anxiety, and they showed up and did a phenomenal job, ”said Roy Butler, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care London.

Butler said that while they are grateful to the staff for stepping up during the pandemic, he emphasized the need to get vaccinated to keep everyone safe.

Of the 40 employees who were laid off, Butler said 19 provided direct care and 21 provided supportive care or worked in administrative areas.

None of the people laid off will receive severance pay, Butler said.

Of all the staff, one doctor met the requirements for a medical exemption, while the other 40 did not comply and are being laid off.

Anticipating the potential loss of staff, Butler noted that they have been working to hire more people to fill the vacancies in recent months.

“We know that (vaccines are) the most effective strategy against this virus, so we must continue with our mandatory vaccination policy.”

St. Joseph’s is not the first healthcare organization to implement a vaccine policy, and the London Health Sciences Center is doing so too.

In the LHSC case, 84 employees were laid off after missing the October 22 deadline to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 84 employees made up less than one percent of LHSC’s 9,148 employees.
