COVID-19: NB Reports 118 New Infections, 31 Confirmed Cases of Omicron Variants So Far – New Brunswick | The Canadian News

New Brunswick reported 118 new COVID-19 cases and 107 recoveries on Monday.

The province also revealed that out of 568 positive samples submitted for sequencing, 31 cases have been confirmed to be the Omicron variant.

Notably, all travel-related cases are among those submitted for sequencing.

“Although the number of confirmed cases of Omicron so far has been relatively low in our province, given what we are seeing in neighboring provinces, it is important that we remain vigilant and do everything we can to curb the spread of this variant,” he said Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer for health, in a statement.

“Understanding that Omicron is highly communicable, Public Health focused on investigating cases so that potential cases could be quickly isolated.”

There are now 42 people in the hospital, including 17 in intensive care. Six of the hospitalized people were initially admitted for another reason, but contracted COVID-19 due to an outbreak at a hospital.

Of those who are hospitalized, 26 are over 60 years old and seven are connected to a ventilator. There is no hospitalized child under 19 years of age.

Currently, 82.6 percent of eligible New Brunswick residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, 89.5 percent have received their first dose, and 14 percent have received a booster dose.

The province said more than a million rapid tests have been given to New Brunswick students. The last day of school for students in grades 7 and 8 will be Tuesday, while students in grades 9-12 will be dismissed at noon on Thursday.

Students in kindergarten through sixth grade began their vacation last Friday, a week ahead of schedule.

“All students are being provided rapid tests to use during the holidays and before they return to class in January,” the statement read.

Breakdown of new cases

Monday’s new cases include:

  • 14 in Zone 1 (Moncton region)
  • 24 in Zone 2 (San Juan region)
  • 53 in Zone 3 (Fredericton region)
  • 17 in Zone 4 (Edmundston region)
  • four in Zone 6 (Bathurst region)
  • six in Zone 7 (Miramichi region)
