Court in Canada denies freedom to Mexican soldier Eduardo León Trauwitz

The General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) reported that the Supreme Court of the Province of British Columbia based in Vancouver, Canada, denied the release of Brigadier General of the General Staff, Eduardo León Trauwitz, for which he will continue to be imprisoned pending his extradition to Mexico, where he is required by the crime of fuel theft.

The FGR It indicated that León Trauwitz tried, through his lawyers, to obtain freedom to carry out his trial in that country.

The Court in Canada argued that the high risk of flight, the seriousness of the probable crimes committed in Mexico and the property damage caused to the Mexican State, are sufficient elements to keep him imprisoned during his extradition process.

“The support that the Government of Canada has provided to Mexico is an example of international solidarity in the face of crime and impunity,” said the FGR.

The general of the Ministry of National Defense was arrested in Canada on December 19 at the request of the Government of Mexico, where the FGR accused him of leading a criminal network to illegally steal hydrocarbon from the Petróleos Mexicanos pipelines (Pemex) through various clandestine shots.

His case was prosecuted by the FGR in 2019, accused of probably being the protector of the huachicol within the national oil company, since it was found that he and a group of accomplices, also already prosecuted, allegedly covered up and protected the huachicol in Pemex’s distribution networks.

The extradition order was processed by the FGR on November 12, 2019, which allowed the Canadian authorities to comply with the arrest on December 19.
