“Corporate interior design should encourage labor productivity”: AMIC

The impact of the current health emergency has caused office spaces are revalued in the face of the new conditions required by the current context, so it is an opportunity for companies to make investments to redesign their corporate offices and thus generate greater labor productivity.

In an interview, Julián Terminel, general manager of the Mexican Association of Corporate Interior Design (AMIC), indicated that the current contingency has made companies see more for their collaborators; however, the mentality persists that the longer you work, the better, instead of prioritizing immediate results.

“In Mexico, a great area of opportunity is in the fact of how we see our own collaborators. Normally there are many companies that continue to work under a scheme where the time spent in the company is weighted more than the quality of achievements, so changing this paradigm from an employee to a collaborator is super important because then it leads us to that the company invests in the collaborator”, highlighted Terminel.

According to the AMIC representative, in Mexico there is a large area of opportunity for the companies themselves to encourage an increase in productivity of the employees.

“Our role in the association is to establish parameters and implementations that lead these companies dedicated to corporate interiors to be highly professional… The intention of all this is to make it a more productive country through corporate spaces,” said Terminel.

According to the latest figures available, during the third quarter of 2021 the Global Index of Productivity Labor of the Economy contracted 2% with respect to the previous quarter and thus, maintained five quarters of decreases.

for association Mexico How are we doing?labor productivity is important, because economic growth in middle-income countries, such as Mexico, can only occur from using the resources that are already available more efficiently, that is, from being more productive.

However, in this context, labor productivity has been left behind because, according to the organization, it is desirable that this index has an annualized growth of 4.8 percent.

Trends

Although, for the general manager of the AMIC it is difficult to speak of a trend given how complex the panorama has been for the office segment, what is perceived is a recovery of it, in addition to the fact that the hybrid modality to work both at home and in company spaces.

“At the beginning, there was a lot of thought that everyone could work remotely and that this was going to be the new modality and over time we realize two things: one, productivity has been lost and another, is that not all people have the adequate space in their own home to work”, indicated Terminel.

For the AMIC This scenario is a great opportunity for companies to invest in improving spaces for their employees. “So, the companies, rather than forcing you to go, are going to have to migrate to a scheme to encourage their employees to want to go to the office, this leads us to having more parent spaces for the collaborator and that calls them attention”.

“In the medium term, the valuation will be higher because we will have a greater number of square meters per user, for example, now a space has been reduced, but once that space is redesigned it will be designed with the same size, but for fewer employees” Terminal added.

The manager of the AMIC, which concentrates more than 40 companies dedicated to corporate interior design, recognized the impact experienced by the office segment, one of the most impacted by the pandemic; however, he highlighted that this is an area of opportunity to generate better work spaces.

“The industry has been greatly affected, but all these alerts highlight how important a workspace is, that it is well done so that there are no contagions and that is going to help more companies that would not have considered it as an investment before. , they will consider it as an investment that adds value to their company”, he said.

Currently, the AMICwhich seeks to encourage best practices in companies dedicated to corporate interior design, has members in the areas of architecture, construction, furniture Y project management.
