Cooperative Police Effort Leads to Car Theft Charges

An investigation into a series of vehicle thefts and armed robberies has led York Regional Police investigators to press additional charges against a 22-year-old man.

Working in partnership with the Toronto Hold Up Squad, the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Bureau and the Halton Criminal Investigation Bureau in a venture called “Project C43,” the York Regional Police were able to identify the suspect and the suspicious vehicle used in commissioning a series. of luxury vehicle thefts and armed robberies.

The suspect vehicle, a 2017 silver Mercedes C43, was stolen on September 19, 2021. Police say it was later used to commit seven robberies and five car thefts.

A further investigation led 22-year-old Babison Vilvarajah of Toronto to police.

He is currently before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket for similar crimes dating back to 2019. Police say the new information connects him to incidents in the York, Toronto, Halton and Peel region between Oct. 13 and Oct. November 5, 2021.

Vilvarajah was arrested on November 5 and additional charges were filed. The suspect now faces seven counts of robbery with a firearm, two of possession of property obtained by crime and four counts of failure to comply with a release order.
