Combustóleo, the seal in the reactivation of refineries

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported a crude processing volume of 799,935 barrels per day, which is the highest for the first month of the year since 2017 and represented an annual increase of 13.9%, according to its Institutional Database, which allowed to increase the volume of fuel production, including fuel oil that has generated controversy around its use by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for thermoelectric generation.

This process volume meant a utilization of 48.8% of the installed capacity in the refineries, which in January 2021 was 42.8% and had dropped to 34% in the same month of 2020 and to 30.9% in 2019.

By refinery, Cadereyta, Nuevo León, had a use of 34.6%, which decreased compared to the use of 45.4% the previous year.

At the Madero refinery, Tamaulipas, a use of 49.9% of the capacity was achieved, which in 2021 was 46.5% and in January 2018 it even reached zero.

Minatitlán, Veracruz, reported a capacity utilization of 36.7%, increasing by more than 10 percentage points in relation to the 26.7% utilization of the previous year.

Salamanca, Guanajuato, where rehabilitation processes have been carried out, had a use of 60.1% of the installed capacity, in contrast to 42.6% last year.

Meanwhile, Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, reported a use of 56.4% of its capacity, increasing from 52.1% in January 2021.

Finally, Tula, Hidalgo, reported a use of 54.6% compared to 43.5% last year.

The last goal that the government has set regarding the crude oil process and the use of the installed capacity of current refineries was to reach 1,375 million barrels per day, using 86% of its capacity.

more fuel oil

Thanks to a greater use of the installed capacity and more crude oil processing, the production of all petroleum products produced in the country was 911,000 barrels per day, with an increase of 12% compared to the month of December. Compared to the production of these products in the first month of 2021, the increase is almost 13%, after adding 104,000 barrels per day to the oil products production report.

With regard to gasoline, which is 30% of the total fuels produced by Pemex, the Petroleum Statistics report for the month of January detailed that 271,200 barrels per day were produced, a volume that is the highest for a month from 2016.

In contrast to December, Pemex produced 6.1% more gasoline of all types and compared to January of last year, increased its gasoline production by 19%, adding 44,300 barrels per day to its production.

Likewise, diesel production increased slightly, by 1%, compared to the previous month, reaching 138,500 barrels per day in January, although compared to the same month last year the increase was 11.5% in the production of this fuel.

But as a consequence of the increase in the production of these light fuels, the production of fuel oil was 268,800 barrels per day, the highest for a month since September of last year, after showing a monthly increase of 27% and an annual increase of 16 percent.

In the current discussion of the amendment to the Constitution to strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission, the need for the state electric company to serve as a vehicle to burn Pemex’s fuel oil by increasing its participation in power generation has been denounced, since each It is increasingly difficult for the oil company to place it on international markets.
