Tyson Philpot had seven receptions for 214 yards and three touchdowns, while his brother and fellow receiver Jalen Philpot had five receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown in the Calgary Dinos’ 53-14 fight over the visiting Thunderbirds on Saturday.

The top four teams from Canada West’s six teams qualify for the postseason and heading into the final week of the regular season, UBC (2-3) is in fifth place, behind the Saskatchewan Huskies (4- 1), Alberta Golden Bears (3-2), Manitoba Bisons (3-2) and Calgary (2-3), who now have the tiebreaker over UBC.

UBC wraps up league play on Saturday (1pm) by hosting Alberta at Thunderbird Stadium and the T-Birds could finish anywhere from second to fifth, depending on various scenarios. The easiest explanation for all of this is that a loss automatically ends your season.

“Our guys have to have a short memory of what just happened and focus on a single goal of having one more point than Alberta at the end of Saturday,” said UBC coach Blake Nill.

Other games on Saturday will see last-place Regina Rams (1-4) host Manitoba and Calgary in Saskatchewan.

The Dinos held the T-Birds to just 95 yards on Saturday. UBC produced 294 yards rushing, led by Dane Kapler’s 161 yards on 11 carries and Isaiah Knight’s 105 yards on 17 carries.

Kapler, who rushed 49 yards for a major, is the son of San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

The Philpots, who played their high school ball with North Delta’s Seaquam Seahawks, accounted for 326 of Calgary’s 361 receiving yards. Both are in their third season with Calgary and helped the Dinos claim the 2019 Vanier Cup national championship. The 2020 college football season was knocked out due to COVID-19.

Jalen was ranked No. 7 in the CFL Scouting Bureau’s Draft 2022 standings released in September, while Tyson was ranked 15. Cory Philpot was a running back in the CFL from 1993 to 2000, and the first five seasons were for the Lions.
