Coastal GasLink Pipeline: Wet’suwet’en petition the UN


Wet’suwet’en people filed a petition with the United Nations on Monday against the “forced industrialization and militarization” of their lands led by Ottawa and British Columbia.

Indeed, they believe that governments are violating their jurisdiction and failing to respect the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, because they leave police on their territory and allow the Coastal Gaslink (CGL) pipeline project to see the day.

The request is made by several indigenous leaders, with the support of experts and many organizations, mainly indigenous and environmental. They call on the UN to look into the matter to end the “forced industrialization” and “militarization” of Wet’suwet’en lands.

“Canada and British Columbia must remove the RCMP and associated police and security services from our territory, and must immediately halt construction and suspend all permits for the construction of the CGL pipeline,” the document reads. .

Recall that in 2020, railways across the country were blocked in support of protesters in British Columbia who oppose the 670-kilometre gas pipeline project. Arrests made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had made headlines.
