Since 2020, the city has invested $4.3 million toward increasing, protecting, and managing the urban tree canopy, including $500,000 this year alone.

“I am proud of the City of Windsor’s ongoing work to expand our current tree population and develop our urban canopy,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens during a news conference on Monday. “These investments help to ensure that we continue making strides, creating welcoming urban spaces for residents to enjoy.”

The city has doubled the number of large caliper trees planted to at least 2,000 per year. It has also established a modern digital inventory of trees along city streets and in public parks, and completed the city’s first comprehensive canopy cover study, the results of which shows Windsor’s canopy cover has risen to around 19 per cent. That’s close to the average for large cities in Ontario.

“Trees are very important to the quality of life of residents of Ward 10,” said Coun. Jim Morrison. “I’m glad that the City of Windsor is continuing to invest in tree planting and the development of the urban tree canopy.”

The city has already planted more than 1,250 trees this year. The remaining 750-plus will be planted during the fall, weather permitting.
