The bottom line for last year was contained in Montreal’s annual financial report and attributed to an additional $146.3 million in revenues over the course of 2021, a drop in operating costs of $94 million and allocations of $52.5 million coming from the accumulated surpluses of city council and the boroughs.
While the city’s total surplus stood at $359.7 million, a deficit run up by the agglomeration reduced that figure by $66.6 million. More than half of the agglomeration deficit — $39.1 million — was due to costs connected with the pandemic.
In 2021 the city spend $1.5 billion on the maintenance of buildings, infrastructure and sports and cultural centers, an increase of 8.1 per cent compared with 2020.
