Chinese drone manufacturer DJI temporarily suspends its business in Russia and Ukraine

The drone giant DJI Technology Co Ltd said it will temporarily suspend business in Russia and Ukrainebecoming the first major Chinese company to stop sales to Russia since the country invaded neighboring Ukraine in February.

“DJI is internally re-evaluating compliance requirements in various jurisdictions,” the private company said in a statement late Tuesday. “Pending the current review, DJI will temporarily suspend all commercial activities in Russia and Ukraine.”

Although Western companies have withdrawn from Russia in protest, many Chinese companies have stayed there, following the example of the Beijing’s position to refrain from criticizing Moscow for the invasion.

Ukrainian officials and citizens have accused DJIthe world’s largest manufacturer of consumer and industrial drones, of leaking data about the Ukrainian military to Russia.

Last month, DJI dismissed those accusations as “totally false”. A German retailer cited that information as a reason to remove DJI products from shelves.

Russia sent tens of thousands of soldiers to Ukraine on February 24 in what he called a special operation to degrade the military capabilities of his southern neighbor and root out people he called dangerous nationalists.

Although the company had posted images online suggesting the Russian military was using its products, a DJI spokesperson said last month that it had been unable to confirm this and had no control over use of its products.

“We are engaging with customers, partners, and other interested parties regarding the temporary suspension of business operations in the affected territories,” DJI’s statement added on Tuesday.
