Chile awards green hydrogen projects to attract $ 1 billion to the country

The Chilean state agency Corfo awarded six projects to develop green hydrogen to companies such as Enel, Linde and Air Liquide, among others, to attract investments of about $ 1 billion.

The facilities, which must come into operation no later than the end of 2025, will be located in the regions of Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Biobío and Magallanes in the north, center and south of Chile, determined to promote this clean energy technology, said the productive development office.

“The selected proposals will attract investments of 1,000 million dollars and they expect to produce more than 45,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, which will reduce more than 600,000 tons of CO2 annually,” said Corfo Executive Vice President Pablo Terrazas.

The awarded projects have an electrolysis capacity of 388 MW, a size equivalent to what is currently in operation worldwide, he added.

Green hydrogen is obtained by electrolysis of water from electricity from renewable sources, to replace fossil fuels and minimize the carbon footprint. Chile, with intense radiation in the desert north and strong winds in the center and south, is one of the leading countries in the adoption of clean energy in Latin America.

The projects, which will receive a total contribution of 50 million dollars, were awarded to the companies Enel Green Power Chile, Linde, Engie, Air Liquide, GNL Quintero and the local mining company CAP.
