Child dies of COVID-19 in Waterloo region

WATERLOO REGION – A child under the age of 10 has died of COVID-19 in the Waterloo region.

“This is a rare but tragic circumstance, and a devastating reminder of the severity of this virus,” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, medical health officer on Friday.

The boy had underlying medical conditions, Wang said. There were no exposures related to school or childcare.

Wang declined to share more details about the boy out of respect for the family. The boy lived in the region and died recently, Wang said.

“I will not elaborate on the age,” he said.

Wang is unaware of a younger COVID-related death case reported in Ontario. It is the first COVID-related death in a child under the age of 10 in this region.

The boy was hospitalized after falling ill, although Wang did not say in which hospital. The child did not live in a collective care setting.

“We are truly saddened by this tragic loss,” said Regional President Karen Redman.

More to come.
