Chaudière-Appalaches: requests for psychological help on the rise among men


Since the start of the pandemic, requests for mental health assistance have increased, so much so that the Chaudière-Appalaches social info line has recorded an average monthly increase of 300 calls concerning requests for psychological assistance.

In addition, community organizations that help men in crisis are overwhelmed.

Each month, nearly 2,300 requests for assistance are received on the 811 line in Chaudière-Appalaches. We see that men are more likely to ask for support.

“Men are a clientele who consult less, but who unfortunately complete three times more suicides than women,” said Jean-Philippe Moraud Fortin, mental health promotion officer for the CISSS de Chaudière-Appalaches.

This increase in requests for psychological assistance is felt in community organizations. At “Partage au Masculin”, we are breaking records in terms of the number of new files opened.

“This year, we are talking about 800 open files and we have already exceeded the record number of individual meetings,” said Jean-Michael Dubé-Rousseau, a speaker.
