CF Montreal | Grayson Doody’s “Dream” Realized

Watching him go during CF Montreal’s training camp, it was only a matter of time before Grayson Doody signed a professional contract with the team. It’s finally done.

The CFM announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with the right side, drafted at 10e overall rank in the MLS SuperDraft last January. The 22-year-old Californian’s one-year contract comes with three option years, until 2027.

“It’s been a dream for me since I was a child,” said a smiling Grayson Doody on Wednesday after a chilly training session on one of the synthetic fields at the Nutrilait Center.

And to land here, it makes it even more special. (The club) seems to be a tight-knit community. I realized that there is so much pride behind this badge. It’s a special group here.

It is not given to everyone drafted in MLS to be part of the plans of the team that chooses them. This first professional contract, as much as Doody wanted it, he “fought” to obtain it.

“I was aware of that when I arrived (at camp),” he said. With my skills, I always give everything I have on the pitch. I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. »

Doody, a Hermosa Beach native, spent time in the LA Galaxy Academy and then played with the NCAA Bruins for the past four years. He says he was recruited as a striker at the time, but that his “strengths” gradually made him “transition” to the full-back position.

“That’s where I had the most potential,” he said. It was by playing this position that I managed to get this far. »

In his own words, the playing philosophy deployed by head coach Laurent Courtois suits players like Doody well.

“I am a worker,” says the man who ranked among the best in the group during the famous test beep earlier this winter. I run a lot. I like going up and down the lanes, and it fits well with our style of play. I feel comfortable and natural with what the coaches dictate to me. »

“Learn” while waiting for your moment

A good training camp and a first professional contract mean nothing, that said. In two seasons in Montreal, Jojea Kwizera, drafted in 2022, made only 15 appearances and only got 527 minutes in total before being released by the club last December.

The context is perhaps a little different for Grayson Doody. His competition in the right lane, for the moment, is mainly limited to Ruan, who has excelled for two games. We have already seen Ariel Lassiter play on the right, but he generally plays on the left. Lassi Lappalainen is slowly recovering from sports hernia surgery. There is no guarantee that he will place himself in front of Doody on the board when he returns to the game. A return which could be imminent, moreover, the Finn having participated in the session with the group on Wednesday.

I do everything I can to ensure that coach can call on me if he needs it. (…) I hope to play, but I also understand that it is early for me. I try to show that I will be ready when the moment is right.

For the moment, the American is “learning” by taking his first steps in the professional world. The presence of MLS veterans in the group, like Josef Martínez, is also beneficial in this regard.

“They have a professional attitude, in the locker room and on the field. (…) Their level of consistency is one of the themes I have noticed since my arrival. These guys have had great careers with several clubs. I want to have that same longevity. »

The report of the injured

After the return of Lappalainen with the group to training, let’s also add those of Dominic Iankov and Joaquín Sosa on the good news side. Both missed the last game. Matías Cóccaro, out with injury in the 45the minute against FC Dallas, also reunited with his teammates for the entire session. On the other hand, he had to request leave from his media availability due to a strange glitch in his jaw which prevented him from speaking.

The file to watch, otherwise, is that of George Campbell. The right central defender was not present at training on Wednesday. Kwadwo Opoku, injured in the 11the minute Saturday, was not there. He was seen with a boot and crutches in a team photo after the Texas win. A prolonged absence is entirely possible in his case.
