Center-West registers the highest livestock production in the country


Guadalajara, Jalisco. The Center-West of the country is the region with the highest volume of livestock production and Jalisco stands out as the main producer on a national scale.

According to the study of Agrifood Expectations 2022 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of the federal government, national livestock production closed 2021 with a volume of 24.1 million tons and an economic value of 531,739 million pesos.

Of this total, the Central-West region of the country produced 10 million tons, which meant a contribution of 41.5% to the national livestock sector.

By states, the five states with the largest volume were Jalisco -in first place- with 5.5 million tons that represented 22.8% of the national total.

Durango followed with 1.9 million tons equivalent to 8.1% of national contribution; Coahuila with 1.7 million tons (7.4% of national production); Veracruz with 1.7 million tons (7.1%) and Guanajuato with 1.4 million tons, which accounted for 6% of the national livestock production.

The document, prepared by the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), indicates that, according to preliminary figures, the volume of 2021 was the result, mainly, of the greater production of cow’s milk, poultry and beef.

Dairy production increased by 297 million liters, poultry meat increased by 90,000 tons and bovine meat increased by 48,000 tons compared to the previous year.

According to Sader’s analysis, in 2021 national livestock production grew 2.2% in volume and 5.4% in economic value compared to the previous year, making it the subsector with the highest growth among primary activities.

In relation to meat products, the states of Veracruz, Aguascalientes, Querétaro and Jalisco led the production of poultry meat since between the four entities they contributed 45.1% of the national production in 2021. Meanwhile, in beef, Veracruz, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí and Sinaloa were the main producers with 35.8% of the national total.

In pork meat, Jalisco, Sonora, Puebla and Yucatán led production in 2021 with a national contribution of 60.7%, while in plate eggs, Jalisco, Puebla, Sonora and Yucatán were the states that contributed the most volume, adding 78.1% of national production.

positive expectations

Based on the expectations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for 2022, the outlook for this subsector is positive for this year, since a production of 24.7 million tons is expected, a figure that represents an increase of 2.4% compared to 2021.
