CDMX will close 2021 with a lagging economy: Coparmex

Despite economic reactivation efforts and actions to compensate for the negative effects of the pandemic, the Mexico City will close the year without clear signs of recovery, assured the president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) from the capital, Armando Zúñiga Salinas.

During the presentation of the last Economic and Social Report, the local business leader stated that according to economic indicators it seems that the situation in the city during the third quarter did not improve, so it is expected that by the end of the year it will not be possible to return to the levels of before the pandemic.

“For businessmen in the capital it is very clear, the data show us that Mexico City is lagging behind in terms of economic recovery compared to other states in the country. The slow economic recovery of the capital after the health contingency positions us below states such as Jalisco, Nuevo León, Querétaro and the State of Mexico ”, he said.

In this vein, the businessman from the capital projected that it will be until 2024 when an economic recovery is achieved.

If this situation persists, Mexico City is condemned to recover the levels of Gross Domestic Product that it had in 2018 in three years; that is, until 2024 ”, he said.

“This situation will imply a low generation of new, decent and well-paid jobs, a decrease in the purchasing power of capital families and the loss of the city’s competitiveness,” he added.

Situation

According to Economic and Social Report presented this month, the slow pace of the reactivation continues to impact employment.

While in the country the unemployment rate went from 5.1 to 4.2% from September 2020 to September 2021, in the Mexico City it went from 10.3 to 6.7 percent.

During October, 26,453 new jobs were reported in the city according to IMSS records. Despite this, there is still a loss of more than 135,000 jobs compared to February 2020, the month before the start of the health emergency.

In the area of public security, there is concern about the 30 and 44% increase in crimes related to family violence and security.

Called

Zúñiga Salinas called on Government of Mexico City so that they can perform more recovery actions.

“The only future agenda that suits the citizens of the capital is to work in unity to generate concrete actions from the City Government and from the Capital Congress, which ensure real economic growth and the recovery of the jobs lost. families are sorely needed ”, he emphasized.
